Community Reinvestment (CRA)

The Community Reinvestment Act, (CRA) was passed by Congress in 1977 to combat the entrenched and discriminatory practice of “redlining.”  It was designed to encourage commercial banks to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of communities where they operate, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. NJCAEF, and our partner organization, New Jersey Citizen Action, have a long history of leading the efforts to educate the public and policymakers on CRA, and the need to hold banks accountable for their obligation to lend fairly in New Jersey and the region.
