Free Tax Preparation

The 2018 tax season is now CLOSED!

Please check back in January 2019 for information on next year’s tax season!

The New Jersey Citizen Action Education Fund offers free tax preparation services as part of our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program from January through April for households earning $54,000 or less in 2017. NJCAEF’ s free tax preparation service helps hard-working New Jersey families take advantage of all of the tax credits they are eligible for including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and education credits. If you qualify for the EITC, you could receive up to $6,318 in tax refunds! You earned it…now claim it!

Since first launching our program in 2007, the NJ Citizen Action Education Fund has provided more than 36,627 low-income workers with our free tax preparation services, returning more than $59.6 million in refunds to New Jersey families.

NJCAEF’s free tax preparation services are available in English and Spanish. Our IRS-certified staff prepares and electronically files federal and New Jersey state tax returns for individuals and families making less than $54,000 annually, and helps those eligible claim the state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits.

NJCAEF provides free tax preparation services at our Economic Security Center, located at 165 Halsey Street in Newark, NJ 07102 (between Market and Bank Streets), and we have additional satellite sites in Essex and Middlesex Counties (services at our satellite sites are available by appointment only). √ WHAT is the EITC?
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a salary complement that entitles many working families up to $6,318 in refundable tax benefits.

√ WHO can get the EITC?
Anyone who worked at any time during the year and had an annual household income of $54,000 or less may be eligible.

√ HOW can I get the EITC?
You must file a tax return. Contact NJCAEF’s Free Tax Preparation Center at 1-888-TAXES-11 (1-888-829-3711) or (973) 273-0315

√ HOW MUCH money can I get?
The amount you may receive from the EITC depends on your income and family size. For example:

√ DOES EITC affect my benefits?

No. In most cases, EITC will NOT be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, SSI, food stamps, low-income housing or most TANF payments.

√ WHAT if I’m not eligible for EITC?
You may still receive FREE tax filing assistance with NJCAEF if your household income is less than $54,000.

DON’T spend money on tax preparers when NJCAEF will provide these benefits at no cost.

DON’T be fooled by “Fast Cash Refunds” or “Instant Refunds” — Rapid Anticipation Loans (RALS). You’re actually borrowing against your own refund and paying high fees and interest! It’s not worth it.

DON’T be fooled by “Holiday Loans” which are often RALS in disguise.

DO maximize on your tax refund and receive up to $6,318 by calling NJCAEF for an appointment with a tax specialist and file your tax returns for FREE with direct deposit!
